SAIL RULES AS OF AGM MAY 2011
5. SAILS
| (a) | Sails may be made by any Sailmaker but before any sail can be set in a Stewart 34 race it must be measured, stamped (or signed) and a certificate that it complies with these rules issued by the measurers appointed by this Association. |
| (b) | Sailcloth(1) Weight For future sails constructed after 24 January 1985, the minimum actual weight per Sailmakers yard (28.5” x 36”) for any sail cloth used in a sail shall be:
No. 1 Genoa 6.5 oz No. 1 Spinnaker 0.85 oz No. 2 Spinnaker 1.5 oz No. 2 Genoa 6.5 oz No. 3 Genoa 7.5 oz Mainsail 7.5 oz Working Jib Suitable strength Footshelf on Mainsails of less weight is permitted. Recommended weight for No. 2 Genoa is 7.5 oz Should a Sailmaker wish to use any sail cloth with a label which indicates less than these minimums, he may do so only after proving to the Committee that these cloths weigh as specified above,. If need be, the measurer, if he suspects the cloth is not up to the minimum actual weight required, may request that a Sailmaker’s half yard be cut from the sail to test the weight. (2) Type The introduction of Mylar, Mylar-laminate, or any similar type of new sail material for all or part of Stewart 34 sails shall be decided upon at each Annual Rules Meeting of the Association and then 22 months must elapse after such a decision before any such new material (as above) be used in a Stewart 34 race. |
| (c) | Measurements
The sails to be used are only those whose dimensions are listed below and each yacht may set during the course of any race not more than one of each of the different types listed. For all class racing other than championship races, yachts may set a No. 1 Genoa and/or a No. 2 Genoa of the most recent past measurements provided they were measured prior to the 1st May 1989. If a yacht sets either of these sails they shall not set the corresponding sail type of the new measurements listed below. The following are the maximum and minimum measurements for all sails and shall be strictly adhered to: |

| The maximum girth of the No 1 spinnaker shall be 30’. The Maximum half luff measurement shall be 30’ and the maximum ¾ height luff measurement shall be 18’0”. Similarly the maximum girth of the No 2 Spinnaker shall be 25’. | ||||||||||

| (d) | Measurement Methods | |||||
| (1) | All sails to be measured unstretched except Headsail luffs, which shall be measured wrinkle free. (Tension of approx. 20 lbs.) | |||||
| (2) | Mainsail The sail must be set within the black bands (37’6” on mast and 16’6” on boom measured from aft face of mast disregarding any roller reefing set back). Loose footed mains are permitted. Foot round can’t exceed 150mm. | |||||
| (3) | Headsails
(a) |
All sails must fall within a triangle formed by laying down the maximum measurements shown under 5 (c) above with the clew pinned in the clew position and the tack falling on the foot line. Any deficiency is then measured from the tack and head of sail. Foot round where part of the foot of the sail falls outside the triangle is permitted. | ||||
| (b) | The maximum width of the head of each sail measured across the diameter of the head ring at right angles to the luff shall be no greater than 3.75” (inches). | |||||
| (4) | SpinnakerThe butt seam of spinnakers shall be measured by first folding the spinnaker in half on the floor then with one measurer lifting the head to approximately 3 feet from the floor and the other measurer lifting the centre of the foot similarly and both stretching the butt seam until it is parallel to the floor. The length of the butt seam must then be within the rule of tolerance. | |||||
| (e) | Headsails may only be hanked to the forestay, and in the position shown on the sail plan. No. 1 sails may be reefed for racing. Cunningham eye permitted only to the minimum size. Provided however that the preceding part of this rule shall only apply to yachts competing for the overall champion of the class in any particular year and that yachts not carrying their sails as described shall not be eligible for the honour of class champion (albeit that they be competing in a championship race). Such a yacht shall be entitled to use a reefing system or foil (for either its main sail and/or genoa(s)) of whatever type and be able to reef a sail attached to its foil by means of furling the sail using the foil. The sail may then be furled to any position. The maximum size of the sail so carried shall be that shown on the sail plan. There shall be no minimum size. | |||||
| (f) | All spinnakers are to be double luffed. | |||||
| (g) | Battens Four Fibreglass Mainsail battens are permitted of any length. Headsail battens permitted in No. 3 Genoas only and then only 4. The top batten maximum length is 2’9”, the other 3 to be no longer than 1’6”. Other than the mainsail, Battens are only permitted in No 3 genoas | |||||
| (h) | Insignia and Numbers The mainsail is to carry correct class insignia in position shown. | |||||

| (j) | Panels and Patches No sail shall be 2 ply and 2-ply head panels shall extend no more than 25% down the length of the luff and leech. No corner patches may extend more than 14% of the luff in any direction from the tack or clew of any Genoa. | |||||
| (k) | Championship Sails | |||||
| (a) | When the Committee decides and prior to an Annual Rules Meeting, selected Sailmakers will be invited by the Committee to submit designs and prices for the No 1 headsails for the incoming season or seasons. The meeting shall select the most satisfactory tender (not necessarily based on price).The Committee shall then order sufficient sails plus one or more spares to cover the Stewart 34 Championship for the coming season or seasons, plus any required by the Handicap entrants or other owners who wish to avail themselves of the bulk-purchase price. The Committee shall set the price for the use of such Championship sails, which shall be individually numbered, and the receipt of such money within the parameters set by the Committee will be necessary before such yacht is eligible for the Championship. The Committee will appoint one of its members to conduct a draw that will be made known to the Competitors by5pmon the Friday before each Championship race. Arrangements re the collecting and delivery of the sails after each race shall be finalised by the Committee each year. | |||||
| (b) | Notwithstanding the provision in (a) above, Financial Members of the Stewart 34 Owners Association with Certificates of Compliance with the Class Rules, who choose not to participate in the sail equalisation scheme, may enter the Stewart 34 Division racing for Handicap points prize and shall not be precluded from purchasing sails from any other Sailmaker. | |||||
